Around 1 in 4 of us have methanogens living in our gut, and this can cause no issues, but in some people, methanogens can overgrow leading to excessive methane production.

This is associated with symptoms of bloating, wind, abdominal discomfort, and constipation

There are trillions of microorganisms in our intestines and collectively they make up the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome plays an important role in normal health from digestion to vitamin production and it even regulates the immune system. However, the microbiome can become out of balance when certain types of microorganisms overgrow, especially following the use of antibiotics or a previous gut infection. These microorganisms produce gases that can contribute to symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain and changes to bowel habit.

In the gut, bacteria produce different gases, such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane. These gases are either absorbed in the body, expelled out of the body, or recycled by other bacteria. For example, hydrogen gas is produced by bacteria when they ferment carbohydrates. Hydrogen is then turned into methane gas by microbes known as methanogens.

Methane gas is absorbed through the intestines and into the blood where it is transported to the lungs and exhaled in breath. Methane Breath CH4ECK can detect if you have intestinal methanogen overgrowth by measuring the levels of methane in your breath.

Methane Breath CH4ECK can quickly and easily diagnose intestinal methanogen overgrowth. There is no need to stop any medications in preparation for the test, only a 12-hour overnight fast is needed before collecting the breath samples.
